Fistula (Arteriovenous AVF) Maturation

Fistula care is a crucial process that supports the longevity and health of vascular access in dialysis patients. Since an arteriovenous fistula is created using the patient’s own blood vessels, it provides a natural connection. However, regular maintenance is essential to reduce infection risks and maintain functionality.

Keeping the fistula site clean helps prevent infections. The area should be carefully washed daily with soap and warm water. Chemical-based products should be avoided, and the site should be kept dry.

To ensure proper fistula function, regular monitoring is required. Feeling a pulse or vibration in the area indicates proper blood flow. If swelling, redness, or temperature changes occur, a healthcare professional should be consulted immediately.

Patients should avoid lifting heavy objects and applying pressure to the fistula site. When resting or sleeping, they must ensure the fistula is not compressed. Tight clothing should be avoided, as well as activities that could obstruct blood circulation.

During dialysis sessions, patients must follow the care instructions provided by nurses and doctors. Regular medical check-ups are essential to maintaining the long-term health of the fistula.
