What is a Fistula (Arteriovenous AVF)?

A fistula is a surgically created direct connection between an artery and a vein, primarily used for vascular access in dialysis patients. An arteriovenous fistula is one of the longest-lasting and safest vascular access methods, as it utilizes the patient's own blood vessels.

In patients undergoing hemodialysis, a fistula ensures efficient blood flow to the dialysis machine, allowing it to be cleansed before returning to the body. Over time, the blood vessel with the fistula strengthens and enlarges, facilitating faster blood flow and effective dialysis.

Fistulas are typically placed on the wrist or elbow but may be applied to other areas depending on the patient's condition. After the procedure, regular monitoring is essential to ensure the fistula develops properly and to prevent infections.

Fistula care is crucial for dialysis patients. Adhering to daily hygiene practices and seeking medical attention for swelling, redness, or pain in the area is essential. Protecting the fistula site is a key factor in ensuring successful dialysis treatment.
